Looking For Reading Lesson Plans
Looking For Reading Lesson Plans Lesson plans are defined as blank pieces of paperwork you stare at for hours while every original thought you ever had about the subject(s) slips back into the creative void. Most teachers have archived lesson plans to fall back on. Private tutors, especially those working one-on-one, do not have such a luxury. Every student is different, and if the books and lectures havenât helped, then returning to them wonât yield much better results. And yet most private tutoring services, such as Frog Tutoring, demand individualized lesson plans for each student per session. It can be a conundrum, but fret not! Here are five, free online resources to dig you out of your rut. PinterestEvery teacher, from pre-K to high school, has a Pinterest account. Those who say they donât are liars, self-hating, masochists, or any combination of the three. There are boards for almost every subject and grade level containing everything from games, songs, projects, and even posters and comics. Math tutors and science tutors alike should take special interest in this site, as most of the truly inventive, interactive games and projects fall within those subjects. You can even find reading lesson plans on Pinterest!YoutubeNot just for watching Charlie biting fingers, Youtube is the home to many educational clips and series. These clips should be especially useful to Biology tutors with emphasis in Anatomy and Physiology, where books are not helpful to a practical understanding. Historical skit comedies, such as WBâs Histeria, or BBCâs Horrible Histories should be a welcome relief to History tutors whose subject can be a little difficult to create engaging games and activities that arenât in a group setting. PBS Learning MediaIf you canât trust PBS, who can you trust? This site has a collection of media bits and interactive challenges for all grade levels and subjects. Language and culture tutors should get quite a bit of traction off of their Global Learning collection. Word Dynamo Run through Dictionary.com, this site is dedicated exclusively to word games and language, both English and other. This site is great for English tutors and introductory spanish tutors who are having trouble making grammar lessons interesting and interactive. Itâs also highly addicting. Nobel PrizeThis site is of specific interest to high school and university level Science tutors with a special emphasis on Anatomy, Chemistry and Physics who are dealing with upper level subject matter. The official website of the Nobel Peace Prize offers games (such as the Blood Typing game, The Transistor, and the Diabetic Dog game, to name a few) and a few links to other educational products as well as subject-related featurettes and documentaries on past Nobel Prize laureates. Keeping Up with the World The 5 Fastest Growing Languages
Keeping Up with the World The 5 Fastest Growing Languages Keeping Up with the World: The 5 Fastest Growing Languages In early 2018, The Guardian asked, have we reached peak English?Theres no doubt that English is a widely spoken and studied language across the world. But its standing is challenged by other rapidly growing languages. As new global markets emerge or established ones expand, the importance of being multilingual cannot be overstated. Meanwhile, languages spoken by increasingly populous or diverse regions open doors for new relationships and opportunitiesâ"if you have the communication skills to take advantage. In this post, Ill walk you through five of the fastest-growing languages in the world and the benefits of learning each one. Keeping Up with the World: The 5 Fastest Growing LanguagesAccording to the language publication Fair Languages, the five fastest-growing languages in the world share one core characteristic: theyre each projected to have the most speakers by 2050 based on population and economic data. The demand for second-language speakers will arguably only increase too . For example, even as the technology industry booms and seeks to bridge language barriers with computerized translations, the CEO of one of the largest tech giants in the world still found it valuable to study Mandarin Chinese. If one of these languages sparks your interest, youll want to get fluent fast as it grows in dominance! Immersive learning (surrounding yourself with the written and spoken language) is the classic method for rapid language learning. Of course, if you donât currently live in an area where your target language is spoken, its hard to achieve. FluentU is a great way to mimic the immersion experience no matter where you areâ"it provides authentic videos like movie trailers, music videos, inspiring talks and more. Each video has interactive captions, flashcards and exercises, so you can actively build your vocabulary while absorbing the native sounds of the language. FluentU also keeps track of your learning and suggests more videos thatâll suit your level and goals.FluentU has programs for some of the useful languages that weâll cover belowâ"Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Frenchâ"among several others. Check out all the options and start watching as soon as today with a free trial.Note: some of the languages below will be expected, others not so much. Be open minded!French: Beyond BaguettesThis one is perhaps unsurprising and already a popular choice for second-language learners around the world. But did you know that by choosing French youre choosing a language thats predicted to be spoken by 750 million people by 2050?And those people arent just French. Its a common misconception that learning another language is only relevant if you plan on visiting or moving to the country for which its named (in this case, France). However, French is growing in developing regions like sub-Saharan Africa, and as language learning often goes hand-in-hand with wanderlust, French could just be the key that opens new adventures. Why should French s growth matter to you?For the business-minded undergrad or working professional, French is a truly global language, according to The Economist, which can give your career a significant boost. Youll have a common language with people from Vietnam to Morocco to Switzerland, and youll be equipped to converse with clients and business partners from both established and emerging markets. If you want a peak into the world of French language and culture, check out some of FluentUs authentic French videosâ"like this interview with World Cup fans in the Ivory Coast.Arabic: Dont Underrate ItA hugely misunderstood culture has led to a nationally overlooked language of study. From the media to college campuses, Arabic is neglected as the important, intriguing and growing language that it is.You might not realize how widely spoken Arabic already is, with about 300 million native speakers. Its also been deemed the fastest growing language within the U.S. and even the fastest growing language o n the internet. Why should Arabics growth matter to you?Learning a language is, by extension, learning about a culture. Its impossible to learn a language to fluency without communicating with native speakers, listening to their media or reading their literature.Did you know that Middle Eastern cultures, where Arabic is widely spoken, pride themselves on their hospitality and have a history of being gracious hosts? This is just one tidbit of many to take into account when considering learning Arabic.Furthermore, because of the shortage of people in the Western world who speak Arabic, learning it can automatically make you a standout in any job market or field. (And did you know the Arab-speaking world has a combined GDP of $2.5 trillion?)All of these facts marry to create an especially ripe stomping ground for multilingual business people, journalists and politiciansâ"these are industries thatll be key in the growth of Arabic in the coming years.Spanish: Trusty and Increasingly ImportantTime tested and true, this is one language whose popularity wont be going anywhere anytime soon, and for good reason. There are more than 400 million speakers of Spanish, and its relevance in the business world only continues to grow with countries like Costa Rica establishing themselves as top vacation and retirement spots for U.S. citizens. The language spans two continents, the North, Central and South Americas, and the industries and fields that a Spanish-speaker can go into or further their career in are innumerable. Why should Spanishs growth matter to you?As hinted above, Spanish is a way to open new doors in a stagnant career! Many employers have recognized the usefulness and importance of Spanish, particularly in global business and consulting markets. The importance and value of an American employee who can fluently navigate English and Spanish cannot be understated, and the potential for international travel may increase with acquisition of the Spanish language.F or example, those in the education or medical fields will find a need for their skillsets overseas!Spanish is another language on the FluentU program, and in fact you can start to learn about the languages international growth with this Spanish news broadcast covering its prominence in the U.S.Mandarin Chinese: Worth the WorkLike Arabic, Mandarin Chinese has a reputation for being incredibly difficult to learn, which can be intimidating to many second-language learners. However, the benefits far outweigh the costs and if the cost is simply the time and effort to acquire a new understanding of culture and language, isnt that really a win-win?What ups the intimidation factor for Mandarin is the languages use of pictograms, rather than phonetic writing. But did you know that the language is actually much simpler grammatically than what English speakers are used to in their own language? For example, theres no verb conjugation for different tenses. Why should Mandarins growth matter to you?In 2015, China overtook the U.S. as the worlds largest economy. While that may freak some people out, language learners will recognize this as an opportunity to further both their personal and professional growth in one fell swoop. The enormous markets with which China enters the global economy span industries such as trade, international finance and international consulting, to name a few. This video will get you acquainted with some basic Mandarin business etiquette, among the many other cultural and entertainment videos on FluentUs Chinese program.Hindi-Urdu: A Giant of the Past and FutureBy 2030, India is expected to overtake China as the worlds most populous country. Hindi and Urdu are two of the countrys major languages and have been gaining momentum as languages to learn because of Indias emerging international presence in the literary, art and cinematic scenes, among others. Why should Hindi-Urdus growth matter to you?If youre a lover of history, art or culture, Hindi- Urdu should be at the top of your list.India has a turbulent history of colonialism and the impact of British rule on the countrys psyche will be evident to second-language learners who pursue further learning in the countrys native languages. Youll gain a perspective on the countrys history thats often barely covered or left out of Western curricula.Indias art and traditions also hold increasing sway over the Western culture, as this article from New Geography indicates. If youre passionate about anything from yoga to Bollywood films, Hindi-Urdu is a good option. And of course, as with the other languages on this list, Indias prominence as a world power makes it an attractive option for language-learners who are interested in joining growing business markets at the front of the line.Whichever language you choose to learn (or for a really zany idea, try learning multiple languages at once!), taking the initiative to learn a second language is a wonderful opportunity to undertake a cultural study as well.Shared language is an incredible bonding agent between people, which is especially relevant to remember in a world as closely linked as ours is today. In addition, taking the time to educate yourself on the fastest-growing languages in the world will help you take advantage of unique professional opportunities. And One More ThingFluentU is growing fast right along with the fastest growing languages. FluentU makes it possible to learn languages from music videos, commercials, news and inspiring talks. With FluentU, you learn real languagesâ"the same way that real people speak them. FluentU has a wide variety of videos, like movie trailers, funny commercials and web series, as you can see here:FluentU App Browse ScreenFluentU has interactive captions that let you tap on any word to see an image, definition, audio and useful examples. How I Got a Presidential Press Pass
How I Got a Presidential Press Pass My first presidential press pass deserved a selfie moment! As my senior year of college comes to a close, I have had to say goodbye to the activities I have become immersed in over the last four years. Amongst these activities is student journalism, something I have become particularly attached to. On campus, I am a reporter and editor for the Gettysburg College newspaper, the Gettysburgian, as well as the campus editor for Gettysburgâs branch of Uloop News. I love unearthing stories and crafting articles. My keyboard has been my window to the world. Regrettably, as I plan on pursing a career in veterinary medicine this will be the end of my journalism career for the near future. I am a bone-fide over achiever involved in far too many activities to list and as I get ready for the real world I have come to realize that it is time to start focusing on my career goals (scary stuff for all the seniors out there!). As such, saying goodbye to reporting has been particularly bitter sweet. Nonetheless, I didnât just want to say goodbye to journalism like I said goodbye to my other campus activities. I wanted to go out with a bang. I wrote double the stories I usually write and covered more than my normal range of topics. But I wanted something more. I wanted to find a hard hitting story that would get people talking. When presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders announced he was coming to Gettysburg I knew I had found my story! In preparation for the Pennsylvania primaries Senator Sanders made his way to the Gettysburg campus to share the âBernâ with the Burg residents. When the email with the announcement went out to the Gettysburg campus, the Facebook chat my other newspaper editors share immediately blew up. For a small campus that hasnât seen much action since the Battle of Gettysburg ended in 1863, I knew something exciting must have been happening when my phone began pinging out of control. Immediately, questions began to raise over who would get a coveted press pass to cover the event. As sports editor, my chance at getting that press pass was about as far from reality as Donald Trump becoming the Republican nomineeâ"oh wait that did happen! But I wasnât letting that stop me. I emailed the campaign directly and waited for my response. My hopes began to sink as the event drew closer and my fellow editors shared their excitement over receiving their security clearance and press passes to represent their various other roles on campus. When I woke up on Friday morning the day of the event, however, I was presently surprised by a confirmation email guaranteeing me a press passâ"a real press pass! My Rory Gilmore journalism dream had been fulfilled! I was being given exclusive access to cover a real event â" a national news story â" and I wasnât just getting clearance from the college but from the Secret Service and a Presidential campaign press secretary! My adventure didnât stop there. The event began in the afternoon with the last admittance time for press at 1:30 p.m. Unfortunately for me, as this is the end of the school year, Friday was also the day to hang the photos for my Art Studio senior project. I finished hanging the photos at 1:10 p.m. Giving me just 20 minutes to print my newspaper credentials, grab my camera, and make my way over to the gym. As I arrived at the event I had just 3 minutes to spare. I approached the side doors only to be turned away by two police officers and a Secret Service agent. I was told the gym was filled and the doors were shut. I walked away in dismay. In a panic, somewhere from deep down inside of me, came a very assertive version of myself that I havenât seen before and I doubt Iâll see again any time soon. I walked right back up to the police officer and insisted I must be allowed in as I had a pre-approved press pass. I waived my badge at the officer and asserted my right as a journalist under the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution. With 1 minute left to spare I was told I could try the backdoor of the gym but only if I went two blocks around following the barricade. I ran as fast as I could in and made it just in time. The glorious âmedia entranceâ sign was like a beacon of hope at the end of my tunnel! I walked in and was handed my press pass after confirming my ID. If this isnât the coolest thing youâve seen you are seriously lacking common sense. My Bernie Sanders and Gettysburgian press pass. I was then patted down by two Secret Service agents as another agent took apart my camera. The Secret Service security check in. And then I was home free! I was directed down a media only hallway and the fun began. The press ONLY entrance. As I entered the gym looking up at the crowd of fellow students and town residents I realized I had the spot everyone wanted. I was at ground level with a roped off section giving me access to all sides of the stage so I could get the best coverage possible. It was a real media event and for once I was being treated like being a reporter mattered. Up close and personal with the candidate himself. I found a central spot right between the Washington Post and NBC teams. National news reporters gearing up for the event. My view was perfect and I had access to all the tools I needed. The campaign press secretary whirled about making sure all of the reporters had the information they required. Center stage at the Bernie Sanders town hall. All that was left was to wait for the candidate himself. The crowd was pumped with enthusiasm. They felt the Bern! The Gettysburg crowd showing their Bernie support. And Bernie didnât disappoint! He hit home with the college aged demographic notorious for supporting his campaign. The man, the legend, Senator Bernie Sanders. It was a magical journalism experience all around. I even capped the day off by grabbing myself a Birdie Sanders button, even if Iâm not a supporter myself. Vendors set up to sell Bernie gear outside the gym. The most popular item? A Birdie Sanders button! So my journalism career came to an end with a bang. Iâve climbed up the ranks of the campus newspaper from paper delivery girl to editor. It has been a marvelous journey worthy of all the late nights, eleventh-hour stories, and panicked texts for last-minute quotes. Iâve become a better writer, team-player, and editor. The skills I have learned will aid me in whatever job I end up in. But more important, the moments and people I have met along the way will be something I cherish for the rest of my life! Signing off for now but not forever! -Bethany
A Brief Overview of Three Types of Chemistry
A Brief Overview of Three Types of ChemistryThere are three main types of chemistry that can be studied at a college or high school. The student may choose to focus on one type of chemistry or choose to pursue all three types of chemistry as part of their studies. In the US, there are two types of chemistry courses, Introductory Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry. The first type of chemistry course is an introduction to the subject which covers fundamental concepts and gives the student an overview of chemistry. The second type of chemistry course is the intermediate course in the Intermediate program. In this course, students will learn to study chemistry and create chemical reactions. Students taking this course will study the chemical structure and properties and chemical equilibrium. It also includes instruction on basic lab work, topics of typical laboratory experiments, and laboratory design. The third type of chemistry course is called experimental chemistry. It can be taken at th e high school level or at the college level. Students who will pursue this course will learn about the use of the laboratory in chemistry and will be involved in the performance of experiments. Students may be required to conduct several experiments under the guidance of a professional scientist. In order to obtain a grade for this course, the student must perform a certain number of experiments and analyze the results. Before going to college or high school, students should take laboratory classes. These classes provide students with the chance to practice all the skills that they have learned while studying chemistry. Students should begin taking laboratory classes at the age of thirteen. While in high school, the student can choose to take classes in mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, or other subjects that interest them.Students that are interested in taking Advanced Chemistry can decide which type of chemistry they wish to pursue by examining the requirements in their sta te. There are some requirements for chemistry at the college level that students must meet before they can apply to college. Therequirements for chemistry at the college level include high school mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, and English as a second language. At the college level, students can choose to be in a science, social science, or mathematics major.Students that choose to major in science must choose an area that has research interests in order to get a degree in this field. Students should decide on a science or social science major that has research interests in order to make the best choice for them when choosing a major.Students that are planning to enter college and start learning chemistry as soon as possible can go through high school or even elementary school. Some classes may not be available and it may be difficult to get a student to take an advanced class. However, by taking a couple of these chemistry classes at an early age, students can save a lot of money in the long run by having a well-rounded science or math education.

My Experience at University of California, Davis
My Experience at University of California, Davis The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Jason earned his bachelors degree in Spanish from University of California, Davis in 2010. Currently based in San Francisco, he specializes in many levels of Spanish tutoring. Check out what he had to say about his time at University of California, Davis: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Jason: UC Davis has a great location California. I felt safe, even late at night, because there is a lot of security and transportation assistance. While I made sure I found apartments close to campus and biked everywhere (its known as a bike town, and is especially great for biking because its so flat), most of my friends took the bus and managed fine. It comes every 20-30 minutes to most areas of Davis from 7AM to around 10PM. The campus is more rural than urban; however, Sacramento, the capitol of California, is 20-30 minutes northeast and is a great urban city. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at University of California, Davis? Jason: While this depends largely on your major, I had a great experience at UC Davis studying my double major of Spanish and Psychology. I attended many office hours for many professors, which is partly why I got such strong grades. The academic advisers care too and are very approachable and available for appointments, so use them as resources. Make appointments earlier rather than later so you graduate on time and can plan effectively. All the teaching assistants were great too; they were qualified and helpful for exams. They are usually PhD students, which is what I am now at University of Georgia. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jason: Dorm life is very fun at Davis. I made many friends my first-year in my dorm and remained friends all four years. The dining commons are great; clean, close-by, and relatively affordable, with a lot of options. Most dorms host many events for students to socialize. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Jason: I always knew I wanted to help people and become a therapist. Two years into it, I discovered it was very competitive and difficult to get internships and extracurricular training opportunities, so I decided to learn Spanish and double-major to make myself more marketable. I chose to major in Spanish because I loved the culture and language. There are also progressively more and more Spanish-speaking people in the U.S. who need mental health services and theres a significant dearth of bilingual health professionals. The only issue with the psychology major at UC Davis is that the introductory classes are quite large, and primarily research-focused not clinical. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life at University of California, Davis? Jason: I honestly did struggle the first couple of months, feeling lonely, homesick and a little out-of-place. After a few months, however, I realized there are so many great people to meet, so I started to really enjoy myself and develop meaningful friendships. I wasnt into Greek life, but I know many people who had great experiences with it. Its very popular at UC Davis. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Jason: I liked the Career Center at Davis I just regret not using it more often to help with graduate school applications. There are many other student support services to take advantage of as well. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges at University of California, Davis? Jason: At first glance, UC Davis may seem over-crowded, but there are many areas to study and explore. The first floor in the library at Davis may be crowded during finals week, but the upper floors are empty and great to study if you thrive on silence. The student union looks crowded too, but it has its spots as well. Describe the surrounding town. Jason: While I didnt leave campus much because I was studying and happy with the many on-campus activities, I know Sacramento has a lot to explore. There are many great places to hike, streets to explore, and sights. Its a cute little town with many great restaurants and booming nightlife. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jason: In psychology, as noted above, I wished most of my classes were smaller so there would have been more dialogue and attention with professors. They did get smaller, however, as I advanced to more upper-level classes. In Spanish, the classes are smaller since there are less students, so I was happier there. While not so much in Spanish, a bigger problem in the Psychology major was getting into classes. A few times the class I wanted or needed filled up before I could register, which was a little disappointing. Psychology is such a popular major, however, that as you advance through the major, your enrollment appointments become earlier, making this less of an issue. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jason: I loved my advanced Spanish grammar class with Dr. Charles Oriel. He is the coolest professor and is insanely knowledgeable about Spanish grammar and vocabulary. He also makes it fun. I attribute a lot of my success and command of the language to him. I also studied abroad twice, three months in Mexico and seven months in Costa Rica, as part of my Spanish major. I loved Latin America and had so much fun. The most difficult part was struggling in the advanced literature course at the University of Costa Rica. Even though I had only been learning Spanish for two years at the time, the professor treated me like a native Costa Rican student with the same standards. Now my Spanish is almost native and reflects extensive language education and training. Check out Jasons tutoring profile.
